ASA 150: Filipinx American Experience (Instructor: Roy Taggueg)
HOW WILL LECTURES BE CONDUCTED?
Synchronous Only (live via Zoom during scheduled class time).
IS ATTENDANCE IN SYNCHRONOUS LECTURES REQUIRED?
No.
WILL SYNCHRONOUS LECTURE MATERIALS BE RECORDED AND MADE AVAILABLE TO STUDENTS?
Formal lectures will be recorded and posted onto the Canvas page. While attendance to the lectures is not required (i.e. part of their grade), it is highly encouraged as there will be group work during class time, and some of their homework assignments will necessitate connecting to their peers.
HOW WILL SECTIONS BE CONDUCTED?
No sections.
HOW WILL OFFICE HOURS BE CONDUCTED?
Office hours will be by appointment only. However, I have made my schedule very flexible in that I have many windows of opportunity for students to meet with me 1-1 on any day of the week (for the entire quarter, there are at least two, hour-long slots available each day except for Fridays) -- but the students have to claim those office hours through my Youcanbookme link in advance. In addition, they have to be planned -- I won't have extended office hours during finals week or week 10 (in other words, there are the same number of slots every week). This is done so that I can protect my own time (I can't have 15 different meetings during Week 10, for example).
HOW WILL EXAMS BE ADMINISTERED?
Any exams and quizzes will be given through Canvas, and they will have at least a 48-hour window before the due date for completion. Students will have at least two hours to complete the exam once they open it on Canvas. Please note that most exams will not actually take that long -- they are designed to be much shorter and those who have done the readings and attended class can probably finish them in 20 minutes or less; the reason they have such a long window is so that if the students are experiencing any issues, or have special needs and requirements, they have ample time to complete the task without feeling the pressure for time (while recognizing that I can't give them infinite time to do it because at that point, there would be no difference between an exam and a hw assignment).
WILL STUDENTS IN DIFFERENT TIME ZONES HAVE OPTIONS TO TAKE EXAMS OR TURN IN ASSIGNMENTS IN THEIR OWN TIME ZONE?
Yes -- as stated before, exams have a window of time for completion of at least 48 hours in advance of the due date. They can complete the exams at their own time so-long they do it in advance of the deadline.
WILL COURSE READINGS OR TEXTBOOK BE REQUIRED THROUGH EQUITABLE ACCESS?
All of the readings for the class will be provided on the Canvas class website.
ARE STUDENTS REQUIRED TO HAVE A WEBCAM, HEADPHONES, AND A MICROPHONE TO PARTICIPATE IN CLASS (EX: NEED THEIR WEBCAM ON DURING CLASS)?
The entire class will be conducted over zoom. While they are not required to turn their cameras on, they need at least a microphone in order to participate during in-class discussions or during group-work so that they can engage effectively with their peers to complete group assignments at their own time, so they will need to figure out a way to connect with their group members outside of class time.
IS THERE ANY SPECIFIC SOFTWARE REQUIRED FROM STUDENTS?
No.
